Broken brackets can be painful and inconvenient. That is why our team here at Schouten Orthodontics in Price, Utah, is happy to talk to you about what to do if you find yourself with a broken bracket during your smile alignment.

-Step No. 1: Always assess the damage. The first thing to check is if the bracket is still attached to the wire. If it is, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax. The wax will keep the bracket from sliding and it will also make your appliance more comfortable for you. If the bracket is not attached to the wire, remove it, keep it in a safe place, and bring it into the office with you. If the bracket is still attached to the wire but it is out of place, slide it back to where it belongs with a cotton swab.

-Step No. 2: Time to take control of the situation. If the broken bracket made the wire protrude out of place, then clip the wire with some fingernail clippers. When you clip the wire, make sure to clip it as close to the bracket as possible. This will help you avoid injuring your cheeks, lips, and tongue.

-Step No. 3: Make an appointment with Dr. John R. Schouten as soon as possible. The sooner you come into the office to get your bracket fixed, the sooner you’ll get back on track toward the beautiful and stunning smile you deserve.
