At Schouten Orthodontics, we recommend that you bring your child in for their first orthodontic evaluation around the age of seven. This allows our orthodontist to spot issues and potential issues early on, when they are easier to correct. Dr. John R. Schouten is happy to provide preventive treatment in Price, Utah. These treatments usually have a shorter treatment time than future developments that are left untreated.
Space Maintainers
Primary teeth help guide permanent teeth into their ideal positions. If a permanent tooth is lost early because of an accident or decay, the neighboring teeth may drift into the space. This can prevent the permanent tooth from coming in or cause crowding. To prevent this, a space maintainer, an appliance that keeps the space open so that the permanent tooth can erupt properly, may be placed.
Guided Eruption
Crowding can be prevented or reduced if treatment is begun while the front teeth are erupting. Our orthodontist will create more space, which allows proper alignment to occur.
Early Extraction
At times, a primary tooth may not fall out when it should or may not come out on its own at all. When this happens, extraction may be needed so that the permanent tooth can erupt in the right place.
