If you have a six-month checkup with your dentist coming up and you’re not sure what to expect because you have braces, there is no need to worry. Your dental cleaning shouldn’t be much different than a traditional cleaning. To help you know a little more, Dr. John R. Schouten and our orthodontic team will be happy to give you some more details.

Because you have braces, the cleaning routine might take a little more time than usual. To begin, your dental hygienist will welcome you to the clinic and will guide you to a comfortable dental chair. Then, they will use special tools and techniques to remove the plaque and tartar that have built up around your braces. This will involve scraping the front, back, and chewing surfaces of your teeth. Once they are done cleaning in and around the hardware, they will floss between each tooth.

In order to floss your smile, they will use a loop-shaped tool and will thread the floss through the space between the wire and the tooth. Next, they will use a sawing motion to get the floss between your teeth. Once it is there, they will rub the floss against the sides of each tooth and will deeply clean along the gumline.

Your appointment should also include taking a few X-rays, nourishing your teeth with fluoride, and thoroughly examining your mouth for signs of dental issues and oral cancer.
