Even though your retainer is made of strong and reliable materials, it still needs routine and daily care and cleaning. If you don’t take good care of your retainer, there is a chance it can fail at keeping your teeth straight and beautiful. So, to help you keep your retainer in tip-top shape, Dr. John R. Schouten and our orthodontic team would like to teach you how to take good care of it.

Step No. 1: Keep your retainer safe – Many people lose their appliances because they don’t keep them in a safe place. So, to help you properly store your retainer, we recommend putting it in the retainer case as soon as you take it out of your mouth. Now that it’s in its little box, keep the box in a safe place you’ll remember, like your backpack, purse, or drawer.

Step No. 2: Clean your appliance – Make it a habit when you brush your teeth each day to clean your appliance as well. You can wash it by soaking it in denture cleaner, like Efferdent and Polident. All you need to do is soak it in the water for the recommended amount of time. Make sure you do so in warm—not hot—water. Also, please remember to wash the retainer with water before you put it back over your teeth.

Doing these two things will help you keep your appliance in the best shape possible so it can keep your teeth in their ideal positions.
