Having braces installed into your mouth is just the first step in the process of realigning your teeth. You will need to come into our office every four to six weeks for a routine adjustment appointment.

At each of these sessions, progressive tension will be applied to the orthodontic hardware, which will affect your teeth and the periodontal ligaments that are anchoring each tooth in its socket. Each adjustment will move your teeth one small step closer to their ideal position.

Missing an adjustment could very likely increase the total amount of time it takes to achieve your ideal smile. If you have a scheduling conflict, you should call 435.637.0820 to set up a new appointment. This will help us keep a reasonable timetable for the realignment process.

The adjustment appointment is also a good opportunity to replace any pieces of hardware or spacers that have suffered some wear and tear. Good oral hygiene is also important for the realignment process. If you’ve been struggling to clean a specific area, be sure to mention it to Dr. John R. Schouten so they can give you advice. In most cases, this could involve using a special oral hygiene tool like a floss threader, interdental brushes, or a dental water jet.

If you have an upcoming adjustment appointment and you have a scheduling conflict, please call 435.637.0820 to set up a new appointment at Schouten Orthodontics.
