As an adult, you may be thinking about improving your the alignment of your smile. Once the purview of young people, braces have become popular for adults in recent years. However, there are issues that affect adults who are considering straightening their smiles, and it is a good idea to talk to your orthodontist before choosing a treatment.

Adults have a greater likelihood of having gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease which could be problematic for braces. Some adults may not have enough jawbone between their teeth to permit an adequate flow of blood. Other adults may have had teeth extracted over the years. As your braces are moving your teeth, those empty spaces may not be suitable new homes for those teeth. Another consideration is that adult jawbones have stopped growing and have hardened. That condition may mean it will take your braces longer to move your teeth than they would in younger people.

If you are considering straightening your smile, remember that you have several options and getting braces is just one of those options. Our orthodontist, Dr. John R. Schouten will be happy to sit down and discuss all of your options with you.
