Sometimes it can be tough to clean your braces and smile during the orthodontic journey. Even though this may be the case for you, don’t give up. It’s important to do your best to keep your braces, teeth, and gums clean and pristine. To help you, Dr. John R. Schouten and our orthodontic team have some tips.

First, brush your teeth every morning and every night with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It’s also important to brush with fluoride toothpaste so your teeth can remain healthy and strong. After you’re done cleaning your smile with your toothbrush and toothpaste, use an interdental brush to clean the small crevices and spaces of your smile.

Second, floss your chompers regularly. It’s best to floss after each meal and snack, especially because it can help you avoid embarrassing food-filled smile moments. When you floss, use the special loop-shaped tool we gave you to thread the floss through the space between the tooth and wire. Once you have the floss in position, send it between the teeth and clean each side as well as the gumline.

Third, visit your dentist for a routine cleaning and exam every six months. This is important because plaque and other harmful substances gather and grow around your braces hardware, no matter how well you clean your smile each day. This appointment will allow your dental team to remove these particles and keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape.
