Your regularly scheduled appointments at Schouten Orthodontics to adjust your braces are essential to gradually correcting the alignment of your teeth. In each of these appointments, of our Orthodontist, Dr. John R. Schouten applied tension to your braces, moving your teeth and ligaments into place.

Even after your braces are removed, there will still be a mild amount of tension in the connective tissues. If that issue is not addressed in some way, it could potentially cause your teeth to return to their original alignment. In many of these cases, the most effective method to prevent a relapse is to use a removable Hawley retainer. It is a simple oral appliance made from dental grade acrylic designed to match the shape and contours of your mouth. It allows your teeth and ligaments to settle into the proper positions.

Wearing a Hawley retainer as directed by your orthodontist is essential for post-treatment success. You will also need to maintain the retainer on a daily basis. Your Hawley retainer needs to be removed before eating a meal or snack to prevent food particles from becoming trapped under it. It’s best to get in the habit of keeping the retainer case with you at all times. You can easily refresh your Hawley retainer throughout the day by soaking it for a few minutes in an equal mixture of water and antiseptic mouthwash. You will also need to give it a light brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a little non-abrasive toothpaste each evening to remove any plaque buildup.
